Minnesota Reveals Vision for USA Pavilion at Proposed 2031 World Expo

Minnesota organizers have unveiled the concept for the USA Pavilion at Expo 2031 Minnesota, a proposed international horticultural exhibition that could bring millions of visitors to the Twin Cities region.

If approved, the event would run from May through October 2031 and represent the first World Expo hosted in the United States since 1984.

The project could become one of the largest international events ever hosted in Minnesota.

A Massive International Event Could Come to Dakota County

Expo 2031 Minnesota leaders expect the event could attract more than 6 million visitors during its six month run.

The proposed Expo site would span roughly 240 acres in Dakota County, with early planning discussions pointing toward land near Rosemount along Highway 55 near the Mississippi River.

The site could feature:

• International gardens
• Biodomes and horticultural exhibits
• Cultural performance venues
• Amphitheaters and gathering spaces
• Educational programming and trade events

The Expo is categorized as an A1 International Horticultural Expo, a global event focused on agriculture, horticulture innovation, and environmental sustainability.

The USA Pavilion Will Be the Centerpiece

At the heart of the Expo would be the USA Pavilion, built around the theme:

“Where the American Dream Meets the Living World.”

The pavilion is designed to showcase how American innovation and entrepreneurship can work alongside environmental stewardship.

Planned features include:

• Immersive exhibits focused on science and innovation
• A vertical greenhouse highlighting horticultural technology
• Cultural performance and broadcast venues
• Native plant landscapes
• Dining spaces featuring rotating American chefs
• Retail areas with artisan goods and American brands

The creative design for the pavilion will be led by BRC Imagination Arts, a company known for designing immersive attractions and exhibitions around the world.

Economic Impact for the Twin Cities

Organizers estimate the Expo could generate over $2 billion in economic impact for Minnesota.

Tourism, hospitality, construction, and international trade partnerships would all likely see major activity leading up to and during the event.

The project would also require major infrastructure improvements in Dakota County, potentially accelerating development in areas like Rosemount, Inver Grove Heights, and other south metro communities.

What Happens Next

The Expo proposal still requires several approvals at local and international levels.

If the project moves forward, organizers expect:

• Infrastructure and site preparation could begin around 2027
• Major construction would occur between 2027 and 2030
• The Expo would open in May 2031

After the six month event ends, the USA Pavilion would remain open permanently as a tourism, education, and innovation destination.

For Minnesota residents, it could become a new attraction similar to a botanical garden mixed with an international cultural center.

And for the Twin Cities region, it could place Minnesota on the global stage.
