If you’re flying out of MSP Airport anytime soon, there’s a new TSA policy you don’t want to overlook. As of May 2025, the Transportation Security Administration has officially banned portable chargers powered by lithium ion batteries from all checked baggage. That means if you’ve been tossing a power bank into your suitcase for emergencies, it’s time to rethink that strategy.According to the Federal Aviation Administration, lithium ion batteries pose a serious risk of overheating and triggering “thermal runaway”—a process that can cause spontaneous fires, often without warning. These incidents have been linked to manufacturing defects, water exposure, and improper packing. Because of the elevated risk, the FAA now requires passengers to carry these devices in their carry-on bags only, where flight crews are trained to recognize and respond to any malfunctions. What’s banned?
Any spare lithium battery—including power banks, portable phone chargers, and even some laptop batteries—must not be packed in checked luggage. Why carry-on is safer:
When a battery is in the cabin, both passengers and crew are more likely to spot an issue quickly and take action. In checked bags, the risk goes undetected until it’s too late.Travel Tip:
If you're not sure whether your charger uses lithium ion, don’t guess—put it in your carry-on to be safe. Better safe than having it confiscated or, worse, causing a safety issue mid-air.Stay informed, travel smart, and pack safe this summer!
