Iconic Uptown Minneapolis Bar Building Hits the Market
One of the most recognizable buildings in Uptown Minneapolis is now officially on the market.
The Carling Building, located at 2907–2911 Hennepin Avenue, once home to the longtime nightlife staple Williams Uptown Pub & Peanut Bar, is currently available for sale or lease.
For decades, the corner was one of the busiest nightlife destinations in the Twin Cities. Now, the future of the building could signal the next chapter for Uptown.
A Historic Uptown Property
The Carling Building dates back to 1925 and sits on one of the most visible corners in Uptown near Lake Street and Hennepin Avenue.
The property totals nearly 27,000 square feet across three floors and includes:
• A 7,300 square foot restaurant space that remains largely turnkey
• Additional commercial and office space
• High visibility frontage along Hennepin Avenue
The building was renovated in 2019, just a few years before Williams Uptown Pub permanently closed in 2022 after nearly half a century in business.
The current owner, Ackerberg Group, purchased the property in 2018 for just over $3 million. According to Hennepin County records, the building is currently valued around $2.36 million.
Uptown Minneapolis Facing Challenges
The listing highlights a broader transition happening in Uptown Minneapolis.
Over the past several years, the neighborhood has faced several headwinds including:
• Retail closures during and after the pandemic
• Extended construction along Hennepin Avenue
• Public safety and livability concerns in some areas
These factors have left several high profile commercial spaces vacant, including the nearby Stella’s Fish Cafe building, which has also been on the market.
Despite these challenges, many investors still believe in the long term future of Uptown.
New Development Signals Potential Rebound
There are already signs of reinvestment in the neighborhood.
A few notable projects and openings include:
• Doran Companies purchasing part of Seven Points with plans for a 228 unit apartment building
• New restaurant and retail concepts opening along Hennepin Avenue
• Continued demand from residents living in the dense apartment and condo communities nearby
Uptown remains one of the most walkable and recognizable entertainment districts in Minneapolis. Its proximity to Lake Bde Maka Ska, Lake of the Isles, and downtown Minneapolis continues to make it attractive for both residents and businesses.
What Could Replace Williams Uptown Pub?
The next tenant for the Carling Building could help define the next phase of Uptown’s evolution.
Possible future uses could include:
• A new restaurant or bar concept
• Entertainment or music venue
• Mixed retail and hospitality space
• Boutique office or creative workspace
