Williams Arena Renamed the Barn by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota in $17 Million Deal

The Gophers' legendary basketball home has a new name. The University of Minnesota announced today that Williams Arena will now be called the Barn by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota as part of a 10 year naming rights sponsorship deal worth $17 million.

What the Deal Looks Like

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, headquartered in Eagan, is investing an average of $1.7 million per season over the next decade. The partnership officially drops the Williams Arena name that has been in place since 1950, when the university honored Henry L. Williams, who coached the Gophers football program from 1900 to 1921.

The arena itself dates back even further, opening in 1928 as the Minnesota Field House.

For Gophers fans, the Barn has been the unofficial name for decades. The new branding leans directly into that tradition rather than replacing it with a generic corporate label.

Why the Timing Matters

This isn't just about slapping a name on a building. The university is navigating a major shift in college athletics economics.

Under the House settlement, schools are now required to share revenue directly with athletes, with payments reaching $20.5 million this fiscal year and escalating to $21.3 million next year. That financial pressure makes naming rights revenue more important than ever.

Athletic Director Mark Coyle has also acknowledged that the nearly century old arena is overdue for updates. In a recent interview, he noted the building's aging facilities and said the university had paused renovation planning to get its financial footing under the new revenue sharing model.

A Familiar Playbook for the U of M

This approach is not new territory for the Gophers. In 2017, the university struck a 14 year deal with 3M to rename the men's hockey arena 3M Arena at Mariucci. That partnership set the precedent for corporate naming rights on campus while preserving the legacy name.

The Barn deal follows the same formula: honor the tradition, bring in the revenue. For a building that will soon celebrate its 100th birthday, that investment could make a real difference in keeping one of college basketball's most storied venues competitive for the next generation of Gophers fans.
