A New Record for Twin Cities Private Clubs
Interlachen Country Club in Edina has become the first private club in the Twin Cities to charge more than $100,000 in initiation fees.
The club’s joining fee now sits at $105,000, up from $95,000 last year and nearly double what it was in 2020.
Two other top-tier clubs, Hazeltine National in Chaska and Wayzata Country Club, both raised their fees to $95,000 as well.
According to an analysis of 25 Twin Cities country clubs:
- The average initiation fee across the metro has climbed to $46,600
- This is up about 9% from last year
- It’s a dramatic increase from the $18,000 average in 2020
Monthly dues are rising too:
- Now averaging $1,160 per month
- Up from roughly $1,075 last year
Capital Investment Is Driving the Increases
The fee hikes aren’t happening in a vacuum.
Interlachen, Hazeltine, and Wayzata have each invested more than $10 million in renovations over the past couple of years.
- Wayzata Country Club completed a $15 million golf course project, driving a surge in membership interest
- Crooked Water Golf Club (formerly Burl Oaks) invested $12 million and raised its initiation fee 40% this year to $17,500
Industry data supports the trend:
- Clubs that reinvest consistently tend to command higher fees and stronger demand
- 48% of Twin Cities clubs now have a waitlist, compared to 25% in 2019
- At the top tier, roughly 70% of clubs report waitlists
