Polaris Sells Indian Motorcycle Brand to California Firm

H1: Polaris Sells Indian Motorcycle Brand to California Firm

Minnesota’s Polaris Industries is officially saying goodbye to one of its most iconic brands — Indian Motorcycle. The Medina-based powersports manufacturer announced this week it will sell a majority stake in Indian to Carolwood LP, a private equity firm based in Los Angeles.

H2: A Strategic Shift for Polaris

According to Polaris CEO Mike Speetzen, the sale allows Polaris to double down on its fastest-growing business areas, like off-road vehicles and powersports technology. “The sale will strengthen our focus on areas with the strongest growth potential and unlock long-term value for Polaris and our shareholders,” he said.

Polaris will maintain a small ownership stake in Indian Motorcycle even after the transaction, which is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026.

H2: What Happens to Indian Motorcycle?

Indian Motorcycle will become its own standalone company with around 900 employees spread across its Monticello, Minnesota, and Spirit Lake, Iowa manufacturing facilities, along with a design center in Switzerland.

Polaris first acquired Indian in 2011, helping re-establish the historic brand as a major competitor in the global motorcycle market. Under Polaris ownership, Indian expanded its lineup and rebuilt its dealership network worldwide.

H2: The End of an Era — or a New Beginning?

While Polaris moves forward with a leaner, more focused portfolio, many Minnesotans see this as a bittersweet moment. The Indian Motorcycle name carries deep roots in American motorcycle culture, and its connection to Minnesota manufacturing is part of that story.

For Indian, the shift could mean greater independence and potential for innovation under its new owners at Carolwood LP.

H2: What It Means for Minnesota

With about 900 jobs tied to Indian, the sale is expected to keep operations largely intact in Monticello and Spirit Lake. Local leaders hope the brand’s Minnesota presence remains strong as it transitions into a new era of growth.

Polaris remains one of Minnesota’s major manufacturers, headquartered in Medina and employing thousands statewide.

Closing

As Minnesota’s manufacturing landscape evolves, one thing is clear — change is constant. Whether you see it as a smart business move or a nostalgic loss, the sale of Indian Motorcycle marks a turning point for both companies.
