A Major Championship Could Come To Edina
The PGA Tour is reportedly considering Edina's Interlachen Country Club as a host site for its revamped Tour Championship. For golf fans across Minnesota and the Twin Cities, this is one of the more exciting local sports stories in a while.
The change is part of a broader PGA Tour playoff overhaul set to take effect in 2028. Interlachen would not host every year. Instead, the Tour Championship would rotate across a handful of prestigious venues, with clubs in New York and Los Angeles also in the mix.
How The New Tour Championship Works
The format is getting a full redesign. After the regular playoffs, the top 32 players advance to a two-week, match-play Tour Championship.
Week one is the group stage. Players are split into eight pods of four, and each golfer plays the other three in match play. The top two from each pod move on.
Week two narrows the field to 16 players competing across four rounds. Golfers advance based on their win-loss record, and the final two undefeated players go head-to-head to crown the champion. It brings match play back to the PGA Tour, a format fans have wanted since 2023.
Why Interlachen Is On The Short List
Interlachen is not a surprise pick. The Donald Ross design has deep championship history, including the 1930 U.S. Open won by Bobby Jones during his legendary Grand Slam season, the 2002 Solheim Cup, and the 2008 U.S. Women's Open. It is also set to host the 2030 U.S. Women's Open.
The club reopened in 2024 after a $30 million renovation, including a $7 million overhaul of the course itself with improved drainage, new bunkers, and a revised layout. In 2025, Golf Digest named it the best renovated course in the country, and Golf.com ranked it the top course in the state.
What It Could Mean For The Twin Cities
