: A Dive Bar with National Acclaim

Palmer’s Bar, located at 500 Cedar Ave. in Minneapolis’ West Bank neighborhood, has been a cornerstone of the city’s dive bar scene since 1906. First opened as Carl’s Bar, the venue was renamed Palmer’s mid-century and has hosted everyone from neighborhood regulars to punk rockers. In 2014, it was named one of Esquire magazine’s “Best Bars in America,” praised for its cheap drinks, grungy character, and unforgettable outdoor patio.

: Why Is Palmer’s Closing?

According to co-owner Pat Dwyer, Palmer’s has been impacted by a nationwide decline in alcohol sales, reporting a 20% drop in bar revenue despite steady turnout for live music acts. While it remained a cultural gem, the financial strain became too great to sustain.

: What’s Next and Final Events

: Palmer’s will remain open through the summer, with its final day set for September 14, 2025. Fans can enjoy one last hurrah during Palmfest, scheduled for July 25–27, featuring live music and the classic Palmer’s vibe one last time.
