Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport's Terminal 2 Is Getting Its Biggest Upgrade Yet
Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport's Terminal 2 turns 25 this year, and it is celebrating with the most significant upgrade in its history.
The Metropolitan Airports Commission is overseeing a $263 million expansion that adds 165,000 square feet to the north end of the Humphrey Terminal, with completion expected in 2027.
If you fly out of MSP regularly, especially through Terminal 2 on Sun Country, Southwest, or Frontier, here is a look at what is being built.
The Airport's First-Ever Sensory Room
One of the most thoughtful additions in the expansion is a dedicated sensory room, designed for passengers who are sensitive to noise or light.
The MAC partnered with Minnesota-based nonprofit Fraser to design the space, which will feature dimmable lighting, sensory-friendly furnishings, and a variety of seating options.
A second sensory room is already planned for Terminal 1's Concourse G, opening in 2028.
New Restroom Suite and Inclusive Facilities
The expansion includes a new bathroom suite with a men's room, women's room, and six single-user rooms open to any gender.
That last feature is a first at MSP.
The suite also includes a larger accessible changing room for adults, a nursing room, and a separate lactation room for mothers who need to pump.
These additions reflect a broader shift in how airports are thinking about the full range of traveler needs.
A Green Roof and Timber Ceiling Built for Minnesota
Two design elements give the expanded terminal a distinctly Minnesota feel.
The green roof, planted with native prairie flowers, grasses, and shrubs, is visible from inside the concourse and is designed to reduce energy use and capture rainwater for on-site reuse.
The timber ceiling uses glue laminated beams and cross laminated roof decking, both renewable materials, that bring warmth and a natural texture to the space.
47 New Concessions Venues by 2029
The Terminal 2 expansion includes a Caribou café, a Lucky 13 bar, and a books, news, and gifts outlet.
But that is only the beginning.
The MAC announced that MSP will add 47 total new concession venues across both terminals by 2029, covering 80,000 square feet, or about 40 percent of the airport's total concessions program.
This is the most significant concessions overhaul at MSP in over a decade.
What This Means for Twin Cities Travelers
MSP is the 17th busiest airport in the country and served more than 36 million passengers in 2025.
Improvements at Terminal 2 are not just an airport story. They reflect the continued investment in infrastructure that makes the Twin Cities metro an attractive place to live, work, and put down roots.
Proximity to a well-connected international airport is consistently one of the top factors buyers consider when choosing where to settle in the east metro.
