Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport just earned the top spot among mega airports in North America for a third consecutive year in J.D. Power's 2026 passenger satisfaction study. For the Twin Cities, that is more than a nice headline. It is a signal about how the region invests in the places we all move through.
A Ranking Built on Consistency
MSP scored 684 out of 1,000, up from 660 the year before. It finished ahead of Detroit at 663 and Phoenix at 642, the same two airports it topped last year. What stands out is not one strong feature but the lack of weak ones. Among mega airports, MSP ranked first in every category J.D. Power measures, including ease of travel, level of trust, terminal facilities, airport staff, and food, beverage, and retail. A J.D. Power leader summed it up by noting MSP has no weak areas as far as passengers are concerned.
Why Investment Keeps Paying Off
J.D. Power noted that the top airports share a common trait: recent or nearly finished capital projects worth more than $1 billion. MSP fits that pattern. The Metropolitan Airports Commission completed a $600 million renovation of Terminal 1's pre-security areas and has another $1.9 billion planned through 2028. That includes a $305 million Concourse G expansion for international arrivals, a $242 million refresh of five concourses, and $263 million for new Terminal 2 gates and concession space. A new Delta One Lounge and nearly 50 rebid restaurants and shops are on the way too.
What It Means Locally
For east metro residents in Woodbury, Stillwater, Cottage Grove, Lake Elmo, and Afton, MSP is the front door to travel. A smooth, highly rated airport is part of what makes the Twin Cities an appealing place to live, work, and relocate to, and it quietly strengthens the region's reputation every time a first-time visitor lands here. With 36 million passengers served in 2025, that first impression reaches a lot of people.
