Minnesota Hockey Hall of Fame Project Advances in Inver Grove Heights
Inver Grove Heights may soon become home to one of the largest hockey destinations in the country. A proposed $70 million Minnesota Hockey Hall of Fame and Museum just cleared a major planning milestone, moving the project closer to construction and a targeted late 2028 opening.
What Is Being Proposed
The plan calls for a 120,000 square foot complex on a 40 acre site near Argenta Boulevard and 65th Street, just off Interstate 494. The facility would include a large museum space, a full ice rink, event and performance venues, and a hockey themed restaurant and taproom. Developers estimate the project could attract as many as 420,000 visitors per year.
Why the Land Use Change Matters
The Inver Grove Heights Planning Commission recently recommended changing the site’s designation from office to mixed use. This change is not specific to the Hall of Fame, but it allows for a wider range of uses, including entertainment, hospitality, and future commercial or residential development around the site.
Public Investment and Local Impact
The city is providing land valued at roughly $8.7 million and supporting infrastructure as part of the capital stack, with public funding estimated at $22 million. While the Hall of Fame itself would operate as a nonprofit, city leaders say the broader goal is to create a higher value, taxable area that benefits the community long term.
What Happens Next
The proposal heads to city council later this month. If approved, developers hope to break ground later this year. With its proximity to Viking Lakes and the Minnesota Vikings training facility, the project could become a new anchor for development in the south metro.
Projects like this raise important questions for residents. Is the tourism and long term growth worth the upfront public investment. As Inver Grove Heights weighs its next steps, this development could shape the area for decades.
