Kizzo Replaces Stepchld in Northeast Minneapolis with Burgers, Tacos, and Brunch

Kizzo Replaces Stepchld in Northeast Minneapolis with Burgers, Tacos, and Brunch

Northeast Minneapolis is about to welcome a brand-new dining concept — and it’s coming from one of the city’s most innovative restaurateurs. Less than a month after closing his Ethiopian-inspired restaurant Stepchld, Kamal Mohamed is opening Kizzo, a counter-service eatery with a casual sports-bar vibe.

From Stepchld to Kizzo

Stepchld, known for its eclectic flavors and intimate 38-seat setting, had a loyal following but proved difficult to sustain long term. Mohamed made the decision to pivot toward a model that was less labor-intensive and more approachable for guests. The result is Kizzo — a restaurant that balances “laid-back energy with refined details,” complete with counter service and multiple TVs.

What’s on the Menu

The menu at Kizzo is designed with accessibility in mind: every item is priced under $20. Fans will be thrilled to see Stepchld’s iconic Cooper Burger return, joined by new favorites such as a smashed salmon burger, shawarma mushroom tacos, and crispy wings. Shareable options include garlic fries, buffalo cauliflower, and even savory peaches with labneh on sourdough.

On weekends, Kizzo will serve brunch featuring cinnamon rolls from Roll Ritual, a brand-new local bakery. The brunch lineup also includes chilaquiles with eggs and tomatillo sauce, plus a hearty breakfast burrito with hash browns, sausage, avocado, and eggs.

Hours and Location

Kizzo will open its doors on Friday at 24 University Avenue NE, Minneapolis. Hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The restaurant will be closed on Tuesdays.

Why It Matters for Northeast Minneapolis

The shift from full-service dining to counter-service reflects a broader trend across the Twin Cities restaurant scene. Rising labor and operational costs have led many owners to reimagine how to deliver quality food while staying sustainable. For Northeast Minneapolis, Kizzo means another exciting spot to gather for affordable eats, late-night energy, and community-driven dining.

If you’re looking for your next go-to spot for burgers, tacos, or brunch, Kizzo should be on your list.
