Historic Cedarhurst Mansion in Cottage Grove to Become Luxury Wedding Venue

Cottage Grove’s historic Cedarhurst Mansion, a stunning 19th-century property with a presidential past, is about to enter a brand-new chapter as a wedding and event destination.

A Historic Landmark with Presidential Guests

Built in 1868, Cedarhurst Mansion was originally designed as a dignified country residence for a prominent Minnesota attorney with national political ties. Over the decades, it welcomed notable guests including Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Warren Harding, and Calvin Coolidge. In 1917, a bedroom and ballroom addition was designed by famed architect Cass Gilbert, further enhancing its historic significance.

Bellagala Steps In

Now, Minnesota-based Bellagala, a wedding services company, has stepped forward to purchase and restore the mansion. With a planned $7.6 million investment, the company aims to preserve the property’s unique architecture while upgrading it for modern use.

The project includes:

  • Restoring original wood shutters and Doric porticoes.

  • Preserving the rose garden as a centerpiece for outdoor ceremonies.

  • Renovating the ballroom to host up to 190 guests.

  • Improving accessibility and functionality with an atrium addition.

  • Keeping historical features intact, including a bathtub once used by Teddy Roosevelt.

Support from the City

The Cottage Grove Economic Development Authority has approved a $100,000 forgivable loan to support the project. City officials see the venue as both a cultural preservation effort and an economic driver for the community.

A Venue Like No Other

Unlike previous redevelopment attempts that proposed commercial and residential projects, this plan prioritizes history and green space. Local leaders and neighbors have expressed excitement, calling it a win for both preservation and community enrichment.

What It Means for Cottage Grove

The Cedarhurst Mansion project represents a rare opportunity: blending historic preservation, community pride, and economic development. Once complete, it will offer couples an unforgettable venue — a chance to celebrate milestones in a space where American presidents once gathered.

For anyone looking for a truly unique wedding or event venue in the Twin Cities east metro, Cedarhurst Mansion is shaping up to be a historic treasure reborn.
