One of Maplewood’s most anticipated redevelopment projects is moving forward—D.R. Horton, the nation’s largest homebuilder, has finalized plans to build 207 homes on the former Ponds at Battle Creek Golf Course.
The new development, Century Ponds, will transform the 92-acre site at 601 Century Ave. S. into a mixed-residential neighborhood with 134 single-family homes and 73 townhomes. Prices are expected to hover around $500,000 for detached homes and $400,000 for townhomes, according to information shared during a community meeting and reported by the Star Tribune.
From Fairways to Front Porches
The golf course, which closed in 2021, has sat vacant for nearly four years. With city support and an environmental assessment now underway, D.R. Horton will begin site work this summer. Construction begins in winter 2025 and is projected to last about four years.
The homes will range in size from 1,500 to 2,600 square feet, with both one- and two-story options. The townhomes will be similar to the company’s popular Copper Hills project in nearby Woodbury.
Community Features & Environmental Impact
Century Ponds will include a public park, walking trails, several small ponds, and protected wetland areas, aiming to balance suburban living with preserved natural beauty. The existing clubhouse and parking area on the site will be demolished to make room for new homes and infrastructure.
The project was scaled back from earlier proposals to reduce density and respond to community feedback. Originally planned for nearly 240 homes, the revised concept plan earned broader approval from the City of Maplewood and residents.
A Major Shift in Maplewood Housing
“This is the biggest site in Maplewood that is not developed,” said Mayor Marylee Abrams, underlining just how impactful this project will be for the east metro housing landscape. The land is currently owned by Ramsey County, and D.R. Horton is moving forward under a purchase agreement approved in 2023.
Once complete, the development will be managed through a combination of individual homeowners, an HOA, and the City of Maplewood. Are You Looking for New Construction Homes in the East Metro?
