California Closets Opening Minnetonka Showroom, Eyeing Woodbury for East Metro Expansion

California Closets Opening Minnetonka Showroom, Eyeing Woodbury for East Metro Expansion

A New Showroom in Minnetonka This July

California Closets is opening a 1,300-square-foot showroom at 5900 Clearwater Drive in Minnetonka this July.

The showroom will sit at the front of a 16,700-square-foot production and office facility the company opened in the same building back in February. General Manager Catherine Orn says the new space is about 67 percent bigger than their previous location near the Edina and Bloomington border, bringing the company closer to its core customer base around Lake Minnetonka.

Beyond Closets: A Whole Home Approach

If you only associate California Closets with bedroom closets, the company has been working to change that.

They've rolled out what they call a whole-home strategy, with designers now trained to handle:

  • Home offices
  • Pantries
  • Garages
  • Laundry rooms
  • Murphy beds
  • Entertainment centers
  • Other custom storage and organization solutions

The showroom itself functions more like a design studio than a retail store.

The process starts with an in-home consultation where a designer visits your house. From there, you come into the showroom to finalize materials and layout selections before installation.

East Metro Expansion Could Include Woodbury

This is the detail that matters most for east metro homeowners.

California Closets plans to close its Southdale Center showroom within the year. After that, the company is looking to establish a presence in the east metro, and Woodbury is specifically on the radar as a potential location.

For homeowners in:

  • Woodbury
  • Cottage Grove
  • Stillwater
  • Lake Elmo
  • Afton

Having a local design studio for custom home organization would be a significant convenience.

A Brand with Minnesota Roots

California Closets first arrived in Minnesota in 1988 as a franchise operation.

The Richmond, California-based company purchased the franchise back from the original owners when they retired in 2021 and has been investing in local growth ever since.

The company previously sold products through Home Depot and Costco but has shifted to a direct-to-consumer model focused on building a stronger local presence and delivering a more personalized customer experience.

Why This Matters for Twin Cities Homeowners

Custom storage and organization upgrades continue to grow in popularity among Twin Cities homeowners and buyers.

Features such as:

  • Custom closet systems
  • Built-in home offices
  • Organized pantries
  • Finished garages
  • Integrated storage solutions

Can make a strong impression during showings and add functional value that buyers notice.

For homeowners considering future resale, improvements that enhance organization and everyday livability often help a property stand out in a competitive market.

This kind of local expansion is worth watching for anyone planning home improvements before a future sale.

Final Thoughts

The opening of California Closets' larger Minnetonka showroom signals continued investment in the Twin Cities market, and the possibility of a future Woodbury location could make custom home organization services even more accessible for east metro homeowners.

As buyers increasingly prioritize functionality, storage, and flexible living spaces, businesses focused on home organization are finding growing demand throughout the region.
