For the first time in decades, travelers at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport will walk into a completely reimagined Terminal 1. The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) has finalized its $600 million renovation of the pre-security areas, a project that began in 2015 and took ten years to complete.
H2: A Brighter, More Spacious Welcome
The project added 17,000 square feet to Terminal 1, pushing the building closer to the roadway to improve curbside passenger flow. Inside, the design shifted away from dated beige tones of the 1960s to a modern aesthetic with terrazzo flooring, white and blue accents, LED lighting, and automatic tinting windows.
H2: Art That Represents Minnesota
Travelers are now greeted by striking installations, including a 29-foot interactive wave sculpture by artist Jen Lewin and six bold murals of horses by MaryBeth Garrigan. These pieces were chosen to better reflect the creativity and character of the Twin Cities.
H2: Functional Upgrades for Comfort
Terminal 1’s baggage claim received new, larger carousels to handle today’s heavier traffic. Restrooms were also expanded, now featuring more stalls, adult changing tables, and water-saving technology. Seating areas throughout the terminal were redesigned to improve comfort and flow.
H2: What’s Next for MSP
The MAC isn’t done yet. Post-security renovations are ongoing, including a $305 million expansion of Concourse G that will add 157,000 square feet for international arrivals, more seating, concessions, and art displays by 2028. Five additional concourses are also undergoing updates in partnership with Delta Air Lines.
