One of Minnesota’s most celebrated chefs is expanding west—with a deeply personal twist. Chef David Fhima, known for acclaimed Minneapolis restaurants like Fhima’s, Maison Margaux, and Mother Dough, is opening his latest culinary concept in downtown Excelsior: Vagabondo.
Set to open in late July 2025, Vagabondo will occupy the corner of Water Street and Second in the former Bacon Drug building—an iconic piece of Excelsior history that Fhima’s team purchased for $3.75 million. The restaurant’s name and theme reflect Fhima’s own heritage; his father was Sicilian, and the concept is being described as “a heartfelt return” to those cultural roots.
While the full menu hasn’t been officially released, expect bold Mediterranean flavors including fresh pasta, wood-fired pizzas, house-made gelato, and even an espresso counter for early-morning visitors. The space itself is getting a stylish update with expansive windows, a cozy lower-level bar, and sidewalk patio seating—just a block from the shores of Lake Minnetonka.
With other celebrated spots like Layline and Parlour already calling Water Street home, Excelsior is quickly becoming one of Minnesota’s most exciting dining destinations. Vagabondo is sure to add even more flavor to the mix.
